Chapter 17, Deep Water
Buoy
A big float that pulls upwards under water, enough to lift a steel ball on a rope. In air it just falls.
How it works
- It is a big, very light float. It floats on the surface, and out of water it just falls.
- Fully under water, it pushes up hard. On a rope, one lifts a steel ball or a bowling ball.
- An anvil is too heavy for one, but two buoys together lift it.
- From the tray it turns only in steps.
Tips
- A buoy is 1.4 m wide: two on one load need about 1.5 m between the tops of their ropes, or they jostle and lift less.
- It must be fully under water to give its full lift.
Where you'll meet it
You first meet it in level 163, High and Dry, in chapter 17, Deep Water.
