Chapter 12, Hot Air
Hot-Air Balloon
Rises while heat warms the air under it and sinks as it cools. Its basket carries a small ball.
How it works
- Heat under its mouth warms the air inside, and warm air lifts it. As it cools, it sinks.
- Heat comes from a candle below it, a heat lamp or rocket exhaust. The closer the heat, the more it lifts.
- It hovers where its warmth just holds its weight, higher when light and lower with a heavy load.
- Pins and flames do not pop it, and wind blows it about.
Tips
- Put the heat right under the mouth.
- Load the basket from the side. A ball dropped from above bounces off the envelope.
Where you'll meet it
You first meet it in level 111, Warm Welcome, in chapter 12, Hot Air.
